DISCIPLINARY SUGGESTIONS  FOR THE PROSPECTIVE APOLOGIST

THE PROSPECTIVE SCHOLAR MUST ASPIRE TO HAVE THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE FOLLOWING IS HELPFUL :

1. Virtue of politeness, ‘fear and trembling’ 1Pe 3:15. love for souls 1Cor 13:1-2   Prayerfulness  1Thes 5:17  That prayer must precede any apologetics task because apologetics is not just intellectual but more spiritual. 2Cor 10:3-5.

2. Self motivation

 3. Character of Christ

2. The understanding that knowledge is good and ignorance is evil.

3  The understanding  that all philosophical wisdom and spiritual wisdom or scientific wisdom are embodied in Christ Jesus. Col 2:2-3.  And that all truth is God’s truth.

4.  The understanding that the Bible has a dominant political motif pointing to the knowledge that in the end God rules over all nations and all universes. We as Christians are redeemed by Christ from the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Heaven and are in turn engaged in a battle to capture souls from the kingdoms of this world into the Kingdom of our Lord. (Rev 11:15)  In this sense it is spiritual and political.  Christianity is thus  political because it is on the mission of invading the kingdoms of this world with the Kingdom of Heaven . Matt 3:2,  4:17, 10:7

5 . That we are here to bring the Kingdom of Heaven down here on earth. Dan 2:21, 44, 4:17, Matt 3:2, 4:17, 7:10, Rev 1’5,11:15

6. Know and practice 4 basic apologetics phases which are:

(i) Assertion. (Declare, Inform, state, posit, make a proposition,) Eg. Acts

: 4:12, Rm 3:23, Jn3:3, Jn  3:16-18, 8:24, Jn 10:10, 14:6

(II) Explanation Matt 22:24-32 , 22:42-45

(iii) Defense Lk 11: 15-26

(iv) Deconstruction:    (2Cor 10:4-5 NLT)  We use God’s mighty weapons not worldly weapons to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

7.  Socratic Questioning :  A deliberate systematic way of questioning, targeting specific ends or goals.

 Eg:

Questioning for clarity which could also involve in questioning to identify or remove ambiguity, contradictions, inconsistencies and incoherence

Questioning to identify presuppositions,

Questioning to identify biases, motives.

Questioning for truth. - Epistemic justification

8. Know the essential Christian doctrine well because one cannot defend what one does not know

9. Basics of logic. Laws of logic, syllogism

10. Basics in Epistemology

11. Basics in Hermeneutics

12. Must be curious about what concept, belief system or philosophy is keeping that soul from the knowledge of Christ.
